The Well Health Center

Cactus is a small multicultural community in the northern panhandle of Texas. People from many countries come to work at the local beef processing plant and live in the surrounding area. It is estimated that more than 20 languages are spoken here!

The people of Cactus have many barriers to accessing health care. Until recently, there was no free standing medical facility. (A part-time clinic opened in July 2018.) The nearest medical services were 12 or more miles away in the cities of Sunray and Dumas. Many residents do not have reliable transportation, and there is no public transportation available. According to Community Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 26% of people in Moore County are uninsured. That number is even higher in Cactus. For those without insurance, the cost of medical services may prevent them from seeking care. Others worry that they will lose their employment if they take time off of work. Language and cultural barriers also make it difficult to access care.

The Church of the Nazarene, through local churches and then Cactus Nazarene Ministry Center (CNMC), has been providing community and social services in the city of Cactus since 2007. We see the provision of health care is an essential part of our ministry. The addition of The Well Health Center in late 2018 or early 2019 will expand the services offered by CNMC to include a faith-based, non-profit health center.

The mission of The Well Health Center is to share the love of Jesus with our neighbors by providing quality, compassionate, and affordable whole person and community health care. The values of our health center are based on care that is: comprehensive, community-based, collaborative, culturally sensitive, cost-affordable, compassionate and Christ-centered. Initial services offered by The Well will be general family medicine, with plans to someday add transportation, mental health, dental, and training of community health workers.

The Well Health Center is a 501(c)3 organization. Funding for the health center will come through a combination of insurance billing and patient fees; grants from private foundations, churches, civic groups, businesses and corporations, local hospital and health care providers, and individual donors.
